Director General of the Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service Kaupo Rosin has said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) needs to deter russia for at least 10-20 years.
Rosin said this in a comment to Reuters.
"The task for NATO in the coming 10-20 years will be to contain or deter Russia so it doesn't get any stupid ideas to push towards the West militarily," Rosin said.
He considers this a feasible task for the Alliance, but only on condition that this issue is taken seriously in the West.
According to him, NATO's military plans must be realistic and supported by appropriate resources in terms of the presence of troops, weapons and ammunition. Properly doing the "homework" will make it possible to deter russia.
Rosin told Reuters that it is difficult for him to imagine that russia and Ukraine will really begin negotiations to end the conflict in the near future.
At the same time, he believes that russia will continue to try to limit NATO's activities, undermining the presence of the Alliance's troops on the organization's eastern flank.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in late November it became known that Cyprus had expressed a desire to become a NATO member. According to Cypriot media, Washington approved this plan.
We also wrote that in September 2024, NATO countries called on their allies to strengthen the air defense of the Alliance's eastern flank.
Recall, NATO is developing a plan to block the russian fleet in the Baltic Sea in the event of a conflict.
