Oslo decides to train Ukrainian F-16 pilots in Portugal - Norwegian Defense Ministry

From the beginning of 2025, Norway will move the training of Ukrainian F-16 pilots from Denmark to Portugal.

The Ministry of Defense of the Kingdom of Norway reported this on its website in an official statement.

"The government has allocated funds to support the training of Ukrainian pilots and ground crew in 2025 as well. At the beginning of the year, F-16 training in Denmark will be discontinued. Starting in the new year, the Norwegian Armed Forces will instead provide instructors to train Ukrainian F-16 pilots in Portugal," said Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.

The Norwegian ministry's statement noted that the training is part of Norway's contribution to the Air Defense Coalition, within the framework of which countries contribute to the further development of the Ukrainian Air Force, including by transferring fighter jets.

The Norwegian Ministry of Defense added that the country will start providing aircraft and instructors for training Ukrainian F-16 pilots in the fall of 2023.

"Now Portugal will take over from Denmark, albeit for a shorter period of time, and then it will depend on the Air Defense Coalition, where the training will take place in the future," Gram emphasized.

On November 28, the Norwegian Parliament supported an increase in support for Ukraine to NOK 35 billion, or USD 3.16 billion, in 2025.
