Since beginning of war, russia carried out 4,800 chemical attacks against Defense Forces units - AFU

Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion, the russian forces have carried out 4,800 cases of use of dangerous chemical substances.

This was stated by a representative of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Department of the Armed Forces Support Forces Command during a briefing in Kyiv.

Russia actively uses gas grenades of the K-51 and RG-VO types, which are intended for suppressing mass riots, but are prohibited for use against the military according to international law.

Statistics for recent months indicate frequent violations:

  • September 2024: 277 cases;
  • October 2024: 356 cases;
  • November 2024: 166 cases.

"Ukraine, as a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention, strictly adheres to international law. Our Armed Forces remain the guarantor of the independence and sovereignty of the state, fulfilling all the requirements of this Convention," emphasized Artem Vlasiuk, a representative of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Department of the Armed Forces Support Forces Command.

The use of chemical substances is most often recorded in areas of the front with a high concentration of russian troops. To conceal these crimes, the russians conduct dense artillery and missile and bomb fire, complicating the collection of evidence for international investigations.

Despite this, the radiation, chemical and biological protection units of the Armed Forces continue to document the facts of violations, perform tasks to protect the military and civilian population, and counter chemical threats.
