In the presidential election of Georgia, which was held for the first time not by direct popular vote, the only candidate nominated by the ruling party, former football player Mikheil Kavelashvili, was approved as the head of state.
This is reported by the portal Ekho Kavkaza [Echo of the Caucasus].
According to the results of the vote, which was held for the first time through the electoral college and in which the ruling party has an absolute majority, Kavelashvili was declared the winner with 224 votes "in favor". One ballot was spoiled.
53-year-old Kavelashvili was one of the leaders of the People's Power party, which formally broke away from the Georgian Dream, and is known for his anti-Western views. Georgian Dream wants to hold the inauguration on December 29.
