The South Korean parliament has voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is suspected of treason after he declared martial law in the country.
This was reported by the Korean news agency Yonhap.
204 MPs voted for the impeachment of Yoon, while 85 voted against. Three more abstained, and eight ballots were declared invalid.
The final decision on impeachment must be approved by the country's Constitutional Court. If the parliament's decision is supported by the court, Yoon will become the second President of South Korea to be removed from office through impeachment. The first was Park Geun-hye, who lost her seat amid a corruption scandal involving her friend.
The South Korean President is suspected of treason and abuse of power. At the same time, he himself rejected the accusations of sedition and said that he would resist the impeachment procedure against him.
Former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun, who is in pretrial detention, where he tried to commit suicide, was also suspected of treason.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 3, Yoon unexpectedly announced that martial law was being introduced in the country. He called the reason the "anti-state activities" of the opposition, which he accused of supporting North Korea.
