2025 will be year of negotiations and possible end to war in Ukraine - NYT

The war in Ukraine will likely end in 2025, as the aggressor country of russia and Ukraine are running out of troops. Next year will be the year of negotiations.

This was written by The New York Times columnist Julian Barnes on Friday, December 13.

According to the columnist, Ukraine and russia are trying to attract more troops, but both are running out of forces. In his opinion, this is "bad news" for Ukraine, as russian occupiers continue to advance in the east and return lost territory in the Kursk Oblast.

"The war in Ukraine will likely end next year. Both Ukraine and russia are running out of troops, and they are trying to call more young people to the front. This reality always meant that 2025 would be the year of negotiations," Barnes noted.

The expert believes that Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election will accelerate these peace talks, because he promised to end the war in Ukraine before his inauguration and wants the talks to begin in the near future. Barnes emphasized that Ukraine still has weapons, but its troops are scattered. Without additional weapons and reserves, Ukraine may not return the occupied territories, the observer noted. "Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy knows this: he recently admitted that Ukraine will restore its territory through diplomacy, not the current "hot" war," Barnes emphasized.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 11, newly elected US President Donald Trump called russia's war with Ukraine a priority problem that he must resolve.

On December 9, Trump confirmed that he had spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the possibility of ending the war.

Recall, on November 15, Zelenskyy said that under Trump, the war in Ukraine would end faster.
