Russian army 6 kilometers from Pokrovsk. Situation critical – ISW

The Ukrainian defense forces are facing intensive attacks by russian troops, who have a significant advantage in both the number of personnel and artillery support.

This is stated in the russian Offensive Campaign Assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) as of December 11, 2024, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

ISW analysts in their report emphasize the critical situation on the Pokrovsk axis. Russian troops continue to advance south of Pokrovsk, in particular in the areas of the settlements of Novyi Trud and Dachenske.

According to experts, such actions may provide russian troops with the opportunity to take positions six kilometers from Pokrovsk.

"Russian forces will likely continue efforts to close the pocket between Novyi Trud and Dachenske in the coming days, as doing so will provide them a stronger position from which to assault Shevchenko (just northwest of Novyi Trud and southwest of Pokrovsk)," the report says.

The spokesman for the Khortytsia operational-strategic group of troops, Lieutenant Colonel Nazar Voloshyn, noted that as a result of the long battles, two Ukrainian positions were destroyed, and another was lost. Currently, measures are being taken to restore the lost positions, he said.

"A Ukrainian battalion commander operating near Pokrovsk characterized the situation in this direction as "critical," largely because each Russian battalion-sized formation receives about 200 fresh personnel per month. The Ukrainian commander also emphasized that Russian forces are attacking Ukrainian positions up to 30 times per day and have an advantage in artillery fires—suggesting that Russian forces are currently relying on a superior number of personnel and artillery ammunition to secure tactical gains in the Pokrovsk direction," ISW reported.

ISW analysts also note that, despite the huge losses, the russian command is persistently trying to capture Pokrovsk. Over the past two weeks, russian forces have lost almost 3,000 servicemen on this axis.
