Zelenskyy opposes lowering draft age

In response to the US proposal to provide equipment for Ukrainian recruits if Kyiv agrees to mobilize 18-year-olds, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for giving weapons to existing brigades and not compensating for the lack of equipment with the youth of soldiers.

The head of state wrote about this in X.

"The media is talking a lot about lowering the draft age of Ukrainians to be sent to the front. We should focus on providing existing brigades with equipment and training personnel to use this equipment. We should not compensate for the lack of equipment and training with the youth of soldiers," he said.

Zelenskyy said that it would be more effective to reduce russia's military potential, not the mobilization age in Ukraine.

"The goal should be to save as many lives as possible, not to save weapons in warehouses," the President added.

Zelenskyy's words were made in response to a statement by US Department of State spokesman Matthew Miller, who once again hinted at lowering the mobilization age in Ukraine.

"We have made it clear that if they create additional forces to participate in combat operations, we and our allies will be ready to equip and train those forces," Miller said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, some representatives of the administration of US President Joe Biden believe that Ukraine should lower the mobilization age from 25 to 18 years.
