Tokyo introduces 4-day workweek to help Japanese people balance work and family life

The Tokyo government has introduced a four-day workweek for government employees to help them balance their work and family life.

CNN reports.

The ultimate goal of the changes, which are set to take effect in April 2025, is to improve the birth rate. Japan is currently the oldest nation in the world. On average, every Japanese woman gives birth to one or two children, but this is not enough to rejuvenate the country.

The Tokyo government is convinced that the four-day workweek will help balance the work and personal lives of employees. The idea is that three days off a week and reduced stress will make it easier to combine a career with having children and caring for them.

Last year, only 727,277 newborns were registered in Japan. In addition to high workloads at work, the decision not to have children is influenced by high housing prices in Japan and a lack of support for childcare.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in Ukraine, mortality is three times higher than birth rate in 2024. There are currently three deaths for every newborn.

In Ukraine, after the war, the birth rate may rise again to 1.5 (children per woman).
