German Chancellor candidate Merz arrives in Kyiv

On Monday morning, December 9, the leader of the German opposition, the candidate for Chancellor from the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, Friedrich Merz, arrived in Kyiv.

This was reported by a DW correspondent.

Immediately after arriving in Kyiv, Merz said that the purpose of his trip was to "find out about the current state of defense" in Ukraine. According to him, he is "looking forward" to meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which will take place as part of the visit.

"And I simply want to find out today what the situation is in Ukraine and what we can do to help this affected country continue its defense against russian aggression," the leader of the Christian Democrats said.

The leader of the German opposition stressed that the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction in the Bundestag "stands firmly" on the side of Ukraine.

"We want this terrible war to end as soon as possible and peace to be restored in Europe," Merz said.

It is noted that Merz is a candidate for German Chancellor from the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU), which is currently leading by a large margin in the sociological polls ahead of the Bundestag elections to be held in February 2025.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Kyiv on Monday, December 2, with an unannounced visit and announced the provision of a new package of military support to Ukraine for EUR 650 million in December.
