Syrian President Bashar al-Assad may have died in plane crash – Reuters

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is highly likely to have died in a plane crash, Reuters reported on Sunday, December 8, citing two Syrian sources.

According to Flightradar24, the Syrian Air Il-76 took off from Damascus at 1:55 UTC (4:55 Syrian time). The plane headed towards the coastal areas where russian military bases are located.

At 2:32 UTC, the plane turned sharply and began to descend. At 2:39, the plane disappeared from radar, at that time it was at an altitude of 500 meters.

"It disappeared from radar, perhaps the transponder went off, but I think it is more likely that the plane was shot down," one of the sources told Reuters.

Bashar al-Assad's rule is over, he has fled Syria in an unknown direction.

On November 27, 2024, Syrian opposition groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a large-scale offensive in the Aleppo province in northwestern Syria.

Within a few days, opposition groups established control over a dozen settlements. Later, they captured Aleppo, one of the largest cities in the country.

Opposition groups continue their offensive in the southern direction. The day before, it became known that the city of Hama had come under their control, after which they continued their movement in the southern direction.
