EU pressing US to ease sanctions on russia's Gazprombank - Bloomberg

The European Union is pressing the United States to develop ways to ease sanctions on russia's Gazprombank, Bloomberg reported on Friday, December 6.

The EU and the U.S. are discussing the type and scope of measures to ease sanctions on russia's Gazprombank, as some European governments and companies have warned that the restrictions would threaten the security of gas supplies.

"Options under consideration in the talks include whether payments can be legally made via a Luxembourg-based subsidiary of Gazprombank, or whether it’s better to use other channels of payments, according to the people, who requested not to be identified as the talks are private,” the report said.

The discussions continue even after russian dictator vladimir putin lifted a requirement that foreign buyers use only Gazprombank when buying russian gas. The move was intended to reduce the impact of U.S. restrictions on russia. Gazprombank is a financial institution key to payments for russian natural gas to the European Union, the agency writes.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on November 21, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury (USDT) imposed sanctions on more than 100 entities in the russian financial sector. Among them are about 50 russian banks, participants in russia's financial infrastructure, as well as high-ranking officials of the Central Bank of the aggressor country.

The aggressor country russia has already lost hundreds of billions of dollars due to sanctions, but continues to earn funds that allow it to continue the war against Ukraine.
