South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has accepted the resignation of defense minister Kim Yong-hyun and appointed Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Choi Byung Hyuk as the new defense minister.
This was reported by Reuters with reference to the presidential office.
Kim, who offered his resignation on Wednesday, December 4, was seen as a central figure in Yoon's declaration of martial law on Tuesday. A senior military official and opposition figures said Kim had recommended Yoon resign.
South Korean President’s Chief of Staff Chung Jin-suk called Choi Byung Hyuk "a principled man who selflessly carries out his duties and abides by the rules."
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 4, South Korean lawmakers proposed impeaching President Yoon Suk Yeol for his sudden decision to declare martial law, which he lifted after a standoff between parliament and the army, which damaged the country's reputation.
As a reminder, on December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol suddenly declared martial law in the country and accused the opposition of "anti-state activities aimed at preparing an uprising."
The administration of US President Joe Biden was not informed in advance about martial law in South Korea and is "seriously concerned about what is happening."
