Zaporizhzhia NPP on brink of blackout for third time in a month due to russian shelling – Energy Ministry

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (Zaporizhzhia NPP) has been on the brink of blackout for the third time in November due to russian shelling, which damaged one of the power lines, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine said in a statement.

According to the Ministry of Energy, "on the night of November 30, due to shelling, the Zaporizhzhia NPP lost power to one of the two external power lines connecting the station temporarily captured by the Russians with the unified power system of Ukraine."

The external power supply of the station, which is necessary for its safe operation, is under threat for the third time in November, the Ministry of Energy stressed.

"Currently, the station is powered by only one power line. If the station is disconnected from external power supply, another complete blackout will occur at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which poses a threat to radiation safety," the statement said.

According to Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko, "Ukrainian energy workers will begin restoring the line as soon as the security situation allows."

"Only the return of control over the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP to Ukraine can guarantee the safe operation of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Every day of the station's occupation brings the Zaporizhzhia NPP closer to disaster," the Minister stressed.

The IAEA has not yet commented on the situation.
