Ukrainian army lost 60,000 to 100,000 people killed, another 400,000 seriously injured - The Economist

The British publication The Economist wrote that in almost three years since the start of russia's full-scale invasion, the losses of the Ukrainian Defense Forces have amounted 60,000 to 100,000 people killed. Another about half a million were seriously injured.

This is stated in the material of the publication, which it wrote, referring to intelligence data from a number of Western countries and information from open sources.

According to The Economist, data on Ukraine's losses in the war vary significantly from source to source, since Ukraine does not disclose this information, and the figures that are in the public domain cannot be confirmed independently.

The publication recalled that in mid-2023, the United States stated that Ukraine had lost about 70,000 people killed on the battlefield. And, for example, according to the UA Losses portal, as of the beginning of this year, the losses of the Ukrainian army amounted to 42,000 people.

These figures cannot be considered true, since servicemen, who are considered missing, are not considered killed.

The data on wounded Ukrainian servicemen also vary greatly. According to American officials, at least 300,000 soldiers were wounded, and according to Western intelligence, 480,000 people.

In this infographic, The Economist indicated data on Ukraine's losses from various sources.

And in the infographic below, the publication indicated the ratio of killed and wounded men by age category.

Thus, according to Western officials and intelligence, as well as portals such as UA Losses, it turns out that the largest number of killed and wounded were among men aged 35 to 39.

The graph shows how these figures correspond to the percentage of the male population in each age category.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in September of this year, the Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, Roman Kostenko, stated that during the first two years of the great war, Ukraine lost about 38,000 servicemen.

With this statement, he commented on an article by the American publication The Wall Street Journal, which previously wrote that Ukraine's losses amounted to about 80,000 people.

As a reminder, in July 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he knew how many people Ukraine was losing every day. He did not name any figures, but said that the losses were not getting smaller.
