The Ministry of Defense is investigating the causes of abnormal mine activation of 120-millimeter mines.
The Ministry of Defense informs about this, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"The Ministry of Defense for the 3rd week has been actively investigating the causes of abnormal mine activation of 120-millimeter mines. The lack of comments in the public space does not mean that the Ministry of Defense is inactive or does not react to information coming from the military or appearing, in particular, in the media," the message says.
At the same time, the ministry emphasizes that it is working "in a closed perimeter" to ensure maximum efficiency and security, because due to the ongoing russian aggression, information about the progress of the work is sensitive, therefore it remains with limited access.
It is noted that the Ministry of Defense has currently suspended the use of the specified batches of ammunition in the Defense Forces, as well as their issuance to combat units until the causes of the abnormal operation are established. The batch of delivered ammunition has been withdrawn for further research, and imported mines will be supplied instead.
"Preliminary results of the investigation by the interdepartmental commission into the supply of low-quality 120-mm mortar mines indicate possible causes of defects, in particular low-quality powder charges or violation of the storage conditions of ammunition, which led to their damage. The State Bureau of Investigation has initiated criminal proceedings on this fact. Based on the results of the work of the interdepartmental commission, appropriate personnel decisions will be made regarding responsible officials," the message says.
The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that it is the customer of the specified type of weapons for the Defense Forces, while the executor of the state order is the Ministry for Strategic Industries.
Currently, the Ministry of Defense has identified measures to improve the quality control process, including increased monitoring of storage conditions and improvement of inspection procedures at all stages: from production and storage to delivery to the front line.
The interdepartmental commission will also inspect mortar mines of other calibers for compliance with production standards, component quality, and storage conditions.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received a low-quality batch of 120 mm mortar mines manufactured by Ukroboronprom, which do not explode. A mortarman suggests that the reason is low-quality TNT inside the mines.
