US President-elect Trump considering Richard Grenell as special envoy for Ukraine - media

Donald Trump plans to appoint Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief and a prominent critic of Ukraine's rapid accession to NATO, as special representative for the "russia-Ukraine conflict".

This was reported by Reuters, citing four sources familiar with the Trump administration's transition plans.

The publication notes that Grenell, who previously served as Ambassador to Germany and served as director of US national intelligence during Trump's presidency from 2017 to 2021, could become a key figure in the president-elect's efforts to end the war in Ukraine if his candidacy is approved.

The publication's sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, note that Trump is considering creating the position of special envoy, who will deal exclusively with resolving the "russia-Ukraine conflict". This could be one of his first diplomatic moves after taking office. However, a final decision on the creation of this position has not yet been made.

During the election campaign, Trump promised to end the war within 24 hours, but has not yet revealed how he plans to do this.

Some of Grenell's statements may make Ukrainian leaders think.

"In July, he spoke out in favor of the creation of "autonomous zones" as a way to resolve the conflict. He also spoke out against Ukraine's accession to NATO in the foreseeable future, which coincides with the position of many of Trump's allies," the report states.

The publication notes that Grenell's supporters emphasize his extensive diplomatic experience and knowledge of European affairs. In addition to working in Germany, he was the US President's special envoy in negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo.

Grenell was previously considered one of the contenders for the position of Secretary of State, which indicates his high trust on the part of the president-elect.
