The only plant in the aggressor country, russia, that makes equipment for liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants, has shut down. This is another sign that Western sanctions are hindering moscow’s ambition to become a leading player in the LNG market.
It was reported by Bloomberg on November 22.
This is a Novatek plant in Belokamenka, Murmansk Oblast, russia, which has been dubbed “the plant to make LNG plants.” According to Bloomberg, the plant is now largely decommissioned.
In late October and early November, the intensity of nighttime lighting at the plant was the lowest since 2019, according to satellite observations.
The site was to become a unique center for assembling modular processing plants capable of supercooling natural gas into liquid form.
After the construction of two such modules for the Arctic LNG 2 project, there are no signs of activity here, which would be necessary for further expansion of capacity in the near future.
According to Bloomberg, this is due to efforts by the United States and the European Union to limit russia's energy revenues after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Bloomberg added that Novatek did not respond to the agency's request to comment on the current level of activity at the enterprise in Belokamenka.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in October 2024, the russian natural gas liquefaction project Arctic LNG 2 ceased commercial production. The reason for this was Western sanctions.
Recall that in July 2024, it became known that russia had purchased more than 50 tankers for its shadow fleet, the task of which is to transport LNG to circumvent sanctions.
We also wrote that due to Western sanctions, China was forced to return two LNG modules that it built for the russian Arctic LNG 2.
