SSU discovers "mole" of russian GRU in ranks of Special Operations Forces

The law enforcement officers detained the "reactivated" agent of the russian military intelligence (GRU). The intruder turned out to be a lieutenant colonel, commander of one of the units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who was recruited by the occupiers even before the start of a full-scale war.

This is stated in the message of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU).

According to the SSU, in the spring of 2024, the person involved in the case was remotely "activated" by a staff member of the russian GRU and defined the task: to transmit to the russians plans for combat operations of the Defense Forces behind enemy lines.

The aggressor was most interested in intelligence about sabotage and reconnaissance raids by Ukrainian special forces behind the front line in the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Crimean Axes.

To carry out the enemy's task, the lieutenant colonel used his official position, thanks to which he received information about the planned routes of the movement of Ukrainian soldiers, their weapons and "targets".

The russians planned to use this information to eliminate Ukrainian special forces on the front line or beyond it - in the temporarily captured part of the territory in the south of Ukraine.

Also, the agent "leaked" data on other units of the Defense Forces to his russian curator.

"As a result of the special operation, the military counter-intelligence of the SSU gradually documented the crimes of the traitor and detained him. At the same time, comprehensive measures were taken to secure the locations of the Defense Forces," the SSU said in a statement.

According to the investigation, the intruder was recruited by the military intelligence of the aggressor country of the russian federation through his acquaintances in russia, with whom he maintained contact.

During the searches, conspiratorial means of communication, computer equipment, a mobile phone and data storage devices were seized from the detainee.

The investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine served him with the suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law).

The perpetrator is in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
