Hungary says foreign hackers breached government's defense procurement agency

Foreign hackers have breached the IT systems of a Hungarian government agency responsible for defense procurement, but no sensitive information about the Hungarian military was compromised.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Chief of Staff Gergely Gulyas has stated this, Reuters reports.

"A hostile foreign non-state hacker group attacked the Defence Procurement Agency, and we can say that no sensitive data about military structure is handled there, so hackers cannot be in possession of those," he said.

It is said the most sensitive data the hackers could have accessed were "plans and data about military procurement". Gulyas did not name the hacker group.

"Nothing that could harm Hungary's national security was made public," he said.

Meanwhile, Magyar Hang reported that a group called INC Ransomware hacked the servers of the Defense Procurement Agency, downloaded and encrypted all the files, and published some screenshots of them on the Internet.

According to Gulyas, the investigation is currently underway.

"The assessment of the exact scale of the breach and what the (hackers) accessed is still ongoing," he said.

It is noted that Hungary announced a program to modernize and rearm its armed forces in 2017. Since then, it has bought tanks, helicopters, air defense systems and started building a military industry, inviting foreign companies to invest and set up factories on its territory.

For example, the German company Rheinmetall produces new Lynx infantry fighting vehicles in the city of Zalaegerszeg in western Hungary.

In addition, the beginning of the war in Ukraine led to another increase in military spending. The Hungarian government has said it expects military spending to be at least 2% of GDP in 2024.
