Attack on Medvedchuk's structures was decisive for start of war by putin - Kuchma

The second president of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, said that the attack on the structures of Viktor Medvedchuk, suspected of high treason, was decisive for the start of a full-scale war with the russian federation.

He said this in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Kuchma is sure that war was not the only scenario for russian dictator vladimir putin.

"He would have preferred easier ways to bring us under his power. Probably, the first bet was on the "fifth column", on provoking an internal split in Ukraine. But it didn't work. I think the blow to Medvedchuk's structures in February 2021 became decisive step of our leadership, after which Putin realized that he would not be able to take us with his bare hands," he said.

The ex-president emphasized that Ukraine could avoid a full-scale invasion of russia, but only the actions of the heads of the Western countries could guarantee this, if they did not engage in the policy of appeasement of the russian government.

"How could war be avoided? Ukraine could do it in two diametrically opposed ways: either strengthen its defense capabilities to a level that would deter Russia from attacking, or surrender without a fight. Unfortunately, for many years, our leaders did not do the first thing. Fortunately, in 2022, they did not make the second one," Kuchma said.

We will remind, in his interview, Kuchma also spoke about the elections. He believes that elections in 2025 are impossible if the war does not end.
