Media sources name another candidate for post of Prosecutor General: who is it about?

Due to the scandal with the registration of disability by prosecutors, the head of the Prosecutor General's Office Andrii Kostin announced his resignation. Now it's up to the parliament, and the Servant of the People declares that there will be no problems with Kostin's dismissal. For some time, the Prosecutor General's Office can lead Oleksii Khomenko, Kostin's first deputy, in the status of acting.

FAKTY writes about this.

At the beginning of September, FAKTY wrote that Iryna Mudra, the deputy of Andrii Yermak, who replaced Andrii Smirnov in this position, was considered a compromising figure in the President's Office for the Prosecutor General's chair. However, this choice is not obvious. Before working in the government, Mudra worked as a bank lawyer, so she never had contact with the prosecutor's offices.

After Kostin submitted application for his resignation, talk of possible candidates intensified. So, last week, the mass media mentioned, in particular, the candidacy of the current head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration Ruslan Kravchenko, which is being considered at the President's Office.

Another possible candidate for the position of Prosecutor General, who is named by the sources, is the MP of the 8th convocation, former acting Prosecutor General of Ukraine, lawyer Viktor Chumak. Unlike the aforementioned candidates, Chumak has considerable experience of working in the prosecutor's office.

He headed the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Combating Organized Crime and Corruption. In addition, Chumak was the deputy of Prosecutor General Ruslan Riaboshapka and held the post of chief military prosecutor, and after Riaboshapka's dismissal, he performed his duties for a short time.

Sources say that the experience of the chief military prosecutor is currently an important factor, because in the event of a war freeze, an experienced and tough military prosecutor will be needed to restore order in the army.

During his career, Chumak has established himself as a specialist in reforming the prosecutor's office and has the respect and support of Ukraine's international partners, which is important for the further development of the justice system. Chumak was not seen in scandals, but left the prosecutor's office due to disagreement with Venediktova's strategy, which she chose when she headed the Prosecutor General's Office.

His considerable experience in the field of law enforcement also speaks in favor of Chumak. He also distinguished himself by his integrity and willingness to implement changes.

Such an appointment could signal to allies that chronic problems throughout the prosecution system will finally be addressed within the framework of the commitments.
