In Ukraine, seven substations have been identified, which are of critical importance for the production of power from nuclear power plants (NPP), where the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) missions will work.
This was announced by Petro Kotin, head of the Energoatom national nuclear energy generating company, during the International Conference "Nuclear Opportunities for the Development of the Country: Wartime and Postwar Reconstruction", which took place on October 15, Interfax-Ukraine writes.
According to Kotin, damage to these substations can lead not only to a stoppage of electricity transmission from the NPPs, but also to disruption of requests for electricity from the Ukrainian power system. This, in turn, can cause a blackout at the stations themselves and create conditions for accidents.
"The schedule of the IAEA missions at these facilities has already been developed, and the mission has already started work at one of the substations," added the head of Energoatom, answering questions from the Energoreforma publication.
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine confirmed that the European Commission plans to allocate EUR 3 million to support IAEA monitoring missions at Ukrainian nuclear power plants, including those substations that are critical for ensuring the operation of nuclear power plants. These funds will come within the framework of the European instrument for international cooperation in the field of nuclear safety.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, stated that Kyiv informed the IAEA about Moscow's preparations for strikes on critical Ukrainian nuclear energy facilities and called for a permanent, expanded presence of missions at all relevant facilities.
Ukraine will continue to serve on the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2025.
