Occupiers cause EUR 2.7 trillion damage to environment since beginning of war

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the russian occupiers have caused damage to the environment in the amount of EUR 2.6-2.7 trillion.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Svitlana Hrynchuk informed about this in an interview with Ukrinform.

"More than 6,000 different cases have already been recorded. According to estimates, this is somewhere around UAH 2.6-2.7 trillion. The damage caused to the environment is one of the largest in monetary terms, because it is a huge amount of damaged and destroyed agricultural land, forest lands of nature conservation and industrial status, polluted basins of our water arteries," she said.

According to Hrynchuk, fires are recorded every day on hundreds of hectares of forests, for extinguishing which it is impossible to use traditional means due to mining, while the number of mined forests is estimated at 0.5 million hectares.

In addition, currently 20% of nature conservation areas of Ukraine are under occupation or in the war zone.

Also, according to the ministry's assessment, the estimated damage to the nature reserve fund of Ukraine amounts to almost UAH 650 billion.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in September the Ministry of Environment reported that the amount of damage to the environment in the Chernihiv and Sumy Regions due to pollution of the Seym and Desna rivers amounts to more than UAH 405 million.
