Nobel Prize in Literature winner refuses press conference and celebrations because of war in Ukraine

This year, the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to the South Korean writer Han Kang. Almost immediately, she refused the solemn press conference and the celebrations in honor of receiving the award. Han Kang explained that she cannot celebrate because there is a war going on in Ukraine and the Middle East and people are dying.

The Korea Times writes about it.

According to the writer's father, Han Kang initially agreed to the press conference, but later refused to participate because "with the war intensifying and people being carried out dead every day, how can we have a celebration or a press conference."

The writer's father also wanted to throw a party at the literary school in honor of his daughter, but Han Kang urged him to cancel the celebration.

"The Swedish Academy didn't give me this award for us to enjoy, but to stay more clear-headed," she explained to her father.

The writer will also not give any interviews, but on December 10, during the award ceremony in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, she will give a speech.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese Nihon Hidankyo movement. For many years, the organization has been telling the world about the dangers of nuclear weapons using the stories of the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
