Today is Rosh Hashanah. How do they celebrate the Jewish New Year

One of the most significant holidays, Rosh Hashanah or the Jewish New Year, in 2024 begins at sunset on October 2 and continues until the evening of October 4. It is celebrated two days in a row during the new moon of the autumn month of Tishrei, according to the Jewish calendar.

When does it come?

Rosh Hashanah is translated from Hebrew as "head of the year". This is one of the most important Jewish holidays. It symbolizes the beginning of a new year and the end of the past year.

The dates of the Jewish New Year are floating, since the traditional Jewish calendar is lunar-solar. Rosh Hashanah begins on the new moon of the seventh month of Tishrei - the month of the beginning of the year of the Jewish calendar, which falls on September - October. This year, Rosh Hashanah will begin on the evening of October 2nd and last until the evening of October 4th. In these days, the Jews will celebrate the 5785th year.

What is forbidden to do on Rosh Hashanah?

During the meal on the days of Rosh Hashanah, it is forbidden to eat bitter and sour food. Jews believe that in this case the new year can bring grief and trouble.
