Day of Defenders of Ukraine. Syrskyi congratulated compatriots on holiday

On Tuesday, October 1, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, congratulated his compatriots on the Day of Defenders of Ukraine.

This is stated in the message of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Facebook, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"This is our holiday, dear brothers and sisters - Ukrainian soldiers!... The holiday of those who, in the most difficult times for their country, were not afraid and chose weapons. The holiday of brave men and women who stood up for the defense of the state. This is the holiday of those who, despite skepticism of the whole world, gave battle to the so-called "second army of the world" and stopped it," the greeting reads.

Syrskyi also emphasized that this is a holiday for those "who are already on the shield, but did not let go of their weapons until their last breath" and forever remained in the memory of the Ukrainian people.

The Commander-in-Chief thanked the parents who raised their sons and daughters to be patriots who defended the Motherland.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Day of Defenders of Ukraine is a national holiday of Ukraine, which is celebrated every year on the day of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God.

Due to the reform of the church calendar in Ukraine from 2023, the celebration was moved from October 14 to October 1.

The holiday was started in 2014 by a presidential decree as Defender of Ukraine Day; since 2021, the name has been changed to the Day of Defenders of Ukraine.
