NSDC Center for Countering Disinformation explains danger of AI images with alleged military personnel on social networks

The Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) has explained the danger of spreading on social networks artificially generated photos of allegedly Ukrainian military personnel with calls to congratulate them on their birthday or wedding.

This is stated in the message of the Center for Countering Disinformation on the Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

It is noted that in the Ukrainian segment of social networks, a large number of posts containing photos with clear signs of generation by artificial intelligence of allegedly Ukrainian military personnel, with calls to congratulate them either on their birthday or on their wedding, are spreading.

There are also similar posts about rescued animals, children or elderly people.

"Such posts are often shared by bots, their goal is to evoke emotions and encourage people to react. Thus, these photos receive thousands of interactions from real users, which contributes to the rapid promotion of pages," the message says.

The Center for Countering Disinformation warns that these pages in social networks can be used by russia in an information war against Ukraine.

In particular, pages with AI images gather a large audience that is not overly critical of what they see online and is susceptible to information manipulation, thus the enemy gets a platform to promote narratives that are dangerous for Ukraine.

The danger of such posts is that they can be used for fraud, because they often contain malicious links, disguised, for example, as a petition that needs to be signed.

The Center for Countering Disinformation calls on Ukrainians to observe information hygiene in the network and not to succumb to manipulation.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in September the National Cyber Security Coordination Center (NCSCC) decided to limit the use of Telegram in state authorities, military formations and critical infrastructure facilities.
