From November, EU changes rules for border crossing: face scanning and fingerprints instead of stamps in passport

From November 10, the European Union will introduce a new automated entry and exit registration system at the external borders of the Schengen area (Entry/Exit System, EES) - now instead of stamps in the passport, face and fingerprint scans will be used.

This was announced by the communications department of the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The Cabinet of Ministers clarifies that no additional fees are currently being introduced, the approach to document verification is changing.

The new IT system will automatically record the entry and exit of all foreigners to Schengen countries. This applies to all non-EU citizens, including Ukrainians, regardless of visa or visa-free status.

What will change:

The EES system will record your biometric data once and store it for 3 years.

There will be no more stamps in the passport.

Registration will take place automatically through self-service terminals.

During the first entry, you will be asked for biometric data: fingerprints and a photo of your face.

Border crossing time may increase by approximately 40 seconds, while your data is being collected.

Biometric data will be stored for 3 years, there is no need to resubmit them.

If you refuse biometrics, you will be denied entry.

Then, at each border crossing, you will need to scan your passport at the self-service terminal.

The EU is introducing the EES to simplify border crossing, strengthen security with the help of biometric documents, prevent the use of fake passports, and combat illegal migration.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the introduction of this system has been repeatedly postponed since the end of 2021 - due to technical difficulties and the need for additional funding, as well as due to Covid-19 quarantines.

In Ukraine, from July 17, when crossing the border, men aged 18 to 60 must have a military registration document.
