Russia has created more artificial intelligence content to influence the US presidential election than any other foreign country as part of its broader effort to prop up Republican candidate Donald Trump over Democrat Kamala Harris.
This was stated by a representative of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), Reuters reports.
Thus, according to him, the AI content produced by Moscow "corresponds to the broader efforts of russia aimed at supporting the candidacy of the former president (Trump) and denigrating the vice president (Harris) and the Democratic Party, including with the help of conspiracy narratives."
Like other forms of artificial intelligence, generative AI learns from past data how to act. Using this learning, it creates new content, such as text, images, and video, that looks like it was created by a human.
A US intelligence official said russia was creating more artificial intelligence content to influence the November election than any other country, but did not provide the volume of that content. He said russia is a much more sophisticated actor and has a better understanding of how US election work and what targets it chooses.
When asked about how russia disseminates AI content, the official pointed to a July 9 Department of Justice statement that busted an operation allegedly backed by Moscow that used social media accounts to spread pro-Kremlin messages in the US and elsewhere.
It is claimed that "russian agents of influence" edited a widely publicized video in which a woman claimed she was the victim of a car accident in which Harris hit her and fled the scene. However, according to him, the video was staged and not created with the help of artificial intelligence. Microsoft said last week that its investigation showed that the video was the result of a covert russian disinformation operation.
In addition, the use of AI has been documented by China and Iran, in particular, but not directly applied to election interference.
"China is using AI in broader influence operations, seeking to shape global views of China and amplify divisive political issues in the US. We do not yet see China using AI for any specific operations aimed at US election results," the official said.
Meanwhile, Iranian agents of influence are using AI to create social media posts and "write inauthentic news articles for websites that claim to be real news sites."
The russian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Russia has previously denied meddling in the US election.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in July of this year, American intelligence revealed how russia is trying to influence the upcoming presidential election with the help of influence operations.
In addition, the White House said that russian dictator vladimir putin should stop meddling in the American election by publicly supporting Kamala Harris.
