At South Ukraine NPP, one of four pumps pumping water through reactor failed - State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate

One of the four pumps pumping water through the reactor failed at one of the power units of the South Ukraine nuclear power plant (Mykolaiv Region).

Ukrinform writes about this with reference to the head of the State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate of Ukraine, Oleh Korikov, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"An operational event took place at the South Ukraine NPP. Increased vibration of the pumping unit, which ensures pumping of water through the reactor, was identified," Korikov said.

He informed that this pump - one of the four - is now stopped, in connection with which the capacity of the power unit of the NPP has been reduced by a third.

"The operating organization - Energoatom national nuclear energy generating company - is planning a set of measures to restore the operational condition of this unit," Korikov said.

According to him, such an exploitation event has a zero level on the international scale.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Energoatom discovered a problem in the operation of one of the power units of the South Ukraine NPP.

In July, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the emergency situation at the South Ukraine nuclear power plant.
