Rada appoints Sybiha Foreign Ministry head

The Verkhovna Rada appointed First Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

MP from the Holos faction, Yaroslav Zhelezniak, announced this in his Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

258 MPs voted for the corresponding decision, with the minimum required 226.

"The first appointment: Andrii Ivanovych Sybiha to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. For -258," he wrote.

The co-chair of the European Solidarity faction in the Verkhovna Rada, Iryna Herashchenko, noted that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was not present at the presentation of his minister.

She also noted that in his speech, Sybiha promised to simplify the provision of consular services. According to him, there are currently 7.5 million Ukrainians abroad.

In turn, Verkhovna Rada member from the Servant of the People faction Olha Vasylevska-Smahliuk reported in Telegram that before being appointed to the position, candidate Sybiha promised to radically change the policy regarding Ukrainians abroad, namely: simplification of the consular service system, creation of an e-consul system for provision of electronic digital services.

49-year-old Sybiha has held the position of First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs since April.

Before that, from June 2021, he was the deputy head of the Office of the President.

In 2016-2021, Sybiha was the Ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey.

Prior to that, he worked in 2012-2016 as the director of the consular service department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in 2008-2012 as an adviser at the Embassy of Ukraine in Poland. Sybiha has been working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1997.

Sybiha speaks English and Polish. He is married, has a daughter and two sons.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on Thursday, the Verkhovna Rada accepted the resignation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba, who had held this position since March 4, 2020.
