The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, plans to pay a working visit to Kyiv and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant next week.
This was reported by the IAEA press service.
"The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, will visit Ukraine next week to hold high-level talks and assess developments at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, where nuclear safety remains unstable," the agency said.
The IAEA notes that this will be the fifth time Grossi has crossed the front line to access the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, after he ensured a permanent presence of agency representatives at the facility to monitor nuclear safety in September 2022. This will be Grossi's tenth visit to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale russian invasion.
"The IAEA acts quickly and decisively wherever threats to nuclear safety arise. Our proactive presence is vital to stabilizing the situation. My message has been loud and clear throughout this tragic war: a nuclear accident must be avoided at all costs, and a nuclear power plant can never be attacked. The consequences can be catastrophic," the head of the IAEA said.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on the evening of August 11, the russians started a large-scale fire on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. They set fire to the interior of one of the cooling towers.
Almost immediately after that, the occupiers tried to blame Ukraine for the incident, saying that the fire allegedly started due to shelling from Ukraine.
It will be recalled that the russian military analyst Yan Matveev called the event a "stupid provocation", since there is no reason to burn like that inside the cooling tower.
