European Parliament calls attack on Kyiv HEPP war crime, for which russia will have to bear responsibility

Member of the European Parliament from the European People's Party (EPP) Tomáš Zdechovský said that the missile attack on the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant is a war crime.

Zdechovský said this in a comment to Guildhall.

According to him, there should not be any discussion about the russian attack on the Kyiv HEPP’s dam. Hitting the structure is a war crime.

The MEP added that with similar attacks, the aggressor country russia is trying to sow panic among the civilian population of Ukraine.

"I am convinced that this is a deliberate attack by the Russian Federation, Putin understands that by such actions he violates international law," said Zdechovský.

And member of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) from the Netherlands, Thijs Reuten, told the Guildhall that the attack on the Kyiv HEPP added to the list of crimes for which russia would have to be held accountable.

He emphasized that the shelling of the Kyiv HEPP’s dam, if successful, would not only cause great damage to Ukraine's energy system, but would also lead to the flooding of most of Kyiv, causing a large-scale environmental disaster.

"Such attacks clearly add to the long list of war crimes for which Putin and his regime will be held accountable," Reuten said.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on the morning of August 26, the occupiers launched a massive air attack on Ukraine, using about 200 missiles and attack drones.

The energy infrastructure of the country, in particular the Kyiv HEPP, was once again the target of the shelling. It was hit by several russian missiles.

Recall that on the day of the russian shelling, the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration Ruslan Kravchenko stated that the Kyiv HEPP was not critically damaged as a result of the missile attack.

In addition, today, August 28, Ukrhydroenergo announced that there is no threat of a breach of the dam of the Kyiv HEPP after a missile attack by the russians.
