With the operation in Kursk Oblast, Ukraine manages to overcome russia's advantage in manpower and equipment –

The operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Kursk Oblast of the russian federation illustrates how Ukrainian forces can use maneuver warfare to offset russian superiority in manpower and logistics.

This follows from a statement by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Thus, according to ISW estimates, russian troops occupied a total of 1,175 square kilometers of territory in the entire Ukrainian theater of operations in the seven months from January to July 2024. Meanwhile, analysts note, in contrast, the Ukrainian operation in the Kursk Oblast advanced about 800 square kilometers in six days from August 6 to 12, and about 28 kilometers deep as of August 17.

"Again, the size of the territory captured by Ukrainian forces is not an indicator of the success of this operation - it is proposed here to show that the maneuver can lead to a much faster advance than a positional war," the message reads.

At the same time, the ISW emphasized that the Ukrainian breakthrough into the Kursk Oblast attacked mostly unprepared, unequipped, and deserted russian defensive positions along the border, but Ukraine continued to use the maneuver for a rapid advance in the Kursk Oblast after the deployment of russian reinforcements in the area.

"Ukraine's use of a maneuver in the Kursk Oblast serves as an example of how a Ukrainian maneuver in combination with operational surprise can lead to relatively large successes in a much shorter period of time with less expenditure of manpower and equipment. A prolonged positional war, on the contrary, will only increase the scarcity of Ukraine's resources, and a protracted war will lead to increased costs for Ukraine and its partners," the analysts explained.

It is indicated that Dr. Frederick and Kimberly Kennedy, who are security and defense experts, believe that Ukraine can achieve significant progress in a short time with less expenditure of forces and resources.

They noted that the problem of restoring operational maneuvers in the war remains a central issue for both sides at the operational level of the war. Ukraine's ability to achieve rapid maneuvering in the Kursk Oblast shows that Ukrainian forces have learned lessons from the last months of positional warfare that can help Ukraine use maneuverability in the future.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, General Syrskyi reported to President Zelenskyy about the strengthening of the positions of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk Oblast and the expansion of the stabilized territory.

Earlier, the Defense Forces of Ukraine destroyed a road bridge over the Seim River in the Kursk Oblast with the help of aviation. The russian occupiers used it to supply their group of troops to the border region.
