Russian army advancing in the east of Ukraine, despite situation in Kursk Oblast - ISW

Russian troops continue active offensive actions in the Donetsk Region, which indicates that the military command of the russian federation prefers to advance in the east of Ukraine, despite the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk Oblast. There is no significant redeployment of russian forces to this region yet.

This was stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

According to the report, russian forces are continuing tactical operations to encircle Ukrainian forces southeast of Pokrovsk. Geolocation images released on August 14 and 15 show that russian troops have recently advanced east of Pokrovsk in the Hrodivka area and southeast of Pokrovsk in the Mykolayivka, Zhelanne and Orlivka area. ISW suggests that the russians probably captured Orlivka and Zhelanne.

Over the past few weeks, russian forces have continued mechanized assaults near Donetsk. Geolocation images released on August 11 shows russian troops carrying out a mechanized assault in the number of about a company southeast of Heorhiyivka.

Although russia has begun redeploying some units to respond to the situation in the Kursk Oblast, the types and locations of these units indicate that the russian command continues to prioritize offensive operations in eastern Ukraine, ISW notes.

The Institute has not yet recorded the redeployment of brigades from Ukraine to the Kursk Oblast, but notes that some parts of russian regiments are being transferred to this region.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on August 15, the British publication Sky News wrote with reference to satellite images that the russians had flown more than 10 combat helicopters into the Kursk airport.

It also became known that russian conscript soldiers are being prepared to be transferred to the Kursk Oblast to repel attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the United States announced that it was observing the movement of russian troops from Ukraine to the Kursk Oblast.
