Operation in Kursk Oblast: It will be difficult for Ukraine to hold captured territories - The New York Times

It will be difficult for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to hold the captured positions in the Kursk Oblast of the russian federation, since they can be attacked from several sides. However, the number of forces that russia will be forced to transfer from the front on the territory of Ukraine depends on the duration of their retention.

This is reported by The New York Times.

In particular, the publication cites the opinions of two experts: retired Major General Mick Ryan, a senior researcher for military research at the Lowy Institute in Australia, and Serhii Kuzan, head of the independent research group Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Center.

In their view, Kyiv will need to expand or hold the captured territories in western russia long enough to force Moscow to transfer significant forces from the battlefield in Ukraine.

At the same time, it will be difficult to maintain a position that can be attacked from several sides, analysts believe. In particular, Kuzan believes that fixed Ukrainian positions are very vulnerable to russian airstrikes. According to him, such dynamics "immediately encourage the use of aviation, guided bombs and ballistic missiles."

At the same time, American officials say that russia has withdrawn some infantry units from Ukraine to the Kursk Oblast. However, they said they did not see the Kremlin transferring the armored battalions that the United States believes russia will need to repel the invasion.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the United States supports the advancement of the Defense Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk Oblast, as this operation is aimed at self-defense.

The Department of State also informed that the United States is not involved in the planning of the operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk Oblast of the aggressor country of russia.
