As stated in the ministry's proposals, one of the items envisages an amendment to Article 68 of the Civil Code, where it is proposed to add a registered partner to the list consisting of: guardian, wife, husband and close relatives (parents, children, brothers, sisters).

"The registered partner cannot be equated with close relatives for the purposes of the Civil Code of Ukraine," the proposal of the Ministry of Health reads.

The Ministry considers it necessary to define "registered partners" in the definition of terms for the purposes of the bill on registered partnerships.

The department also proposes to supplement the bill with an article stating that the law does not apply to relations with registered partners as parents.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Inna Sovsun, a member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Holos faction, explained how a same-sex partnership differs from marriage.

She noted that the partnership does not create opportunities for adoption and transfer of custody rights.
