The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that heavy smoke at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) occurred after "numerous explosions."
This was reported by the IAEA on X.
"IAEA experts witnessed heavy dark smoke coming from the northern part of the Zaporizhzhia NPP after numerous explosions that occurred in the evening," the post reads.
The IAEA also writes that the "Zaporizhzhia NPP team" reported on "an alleged drone attack today on one of the cooling towers located on the site." As a reminder, the power plant has been occupied by russian troops since March 2022. Russia also replaced workers at the facility. It was the russian version of the event that was voiced by the IAEA in its post. At the same time, it was the russian troops who were repeatedly accused of provocative shelling of Zaporizhzhia NPP.
The agency did not report on the impact of the incident on nuclear safety.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on the evening of August 11 in Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk Region, a large-scale fire was reported that started on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP currently controlled by the russians.
According to Yevhen Yevtushenko, the head of the Nikopol District Military Administration, the occupiers probably stacked car tires on one of the cooling towers and set them on fire.
Almost immediately after the start of the fire, the russian occupiers announced that Zaporizhzhia NPP was allegedly attacked by the Armed Forces. They did not provide any evidence for this.
Russian military analyst Yan Matveev called the fire at the Zaporizhzhia NPP a stupid provocation since there is no reason to burn like that in the cooling tower.
Later, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, Serhii Lysak, announced the cessation of the fire at the russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP.
