The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has rejected Ukraine's request to arrest the president of the terrorist country of the russian federation, vladimir putin, in the event of his arrival in the country.
"We can't do that. It's not up to us," he said during a press conference, Reuters reports.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Embassy of Ukraine in Mexico made such a request to the country's government, as putin was invited to the inauguration of the new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, on October 1. The letter reminds that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued a warrant for putin's arrest.
The court's jurisdiction extends to Mexico, which ratified the Rome Statute in 2005.
"Mexico stands for peace and offers mediation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine," Obrador said.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for putin and the Commissioner for Children's Rights of the russian federation Maria Lvova-Belova in March 2023. They are suspected of illegally deporting children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to russia.
After that, putin went only to those countries from which he cannot be extradited to The Hague: China, North Korea, Vietnam, Central Asian states. In 2023, the authorities of South Africa decided for a long time what to do with putin's visit to the BRICS summit. As a result, he was offered to participate via video link. The decision that putin will not come, and that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent him at the forum, was made by mutual consent, the South African president's office said at the time.
