The authorities of the russian federation have warned the main communication operators about slowing down the playback speed of videos on YouTube to 128 kilobits per second.
This was reported by The Moscow Times.
It is claimed that video hosting will not be turned off completely yet, but will only be greatly slowed down for users.
Technically, the slowdown is due to specialized TSPU (technical means of countering threats) equipment installed on the networks of communications operators, which is controlled by russia's censorship body Roskomnadzor.
YouTube on smartphones is not slowing down yet, but the video download speed has also dropped there, just not as significantly.
Sources indicate that access to all Google services may be blocked in russia, ONS24, a provider near Moscow, warned its subscribers.
"We assume that in the future access to all Google services will be completely closed, so we recommend switching to alternative platforms," read the provider's message, which was later removed from the site.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, attempts to slow down YouTube became known in mid-July. This is how the russian authorities encourage users to switch to russian platforms, which are easier to control.
