At the same time, for the first time since 2016, Ukrainian fencers competed in the women's team saber at the Olympics. The team final on August 3 became the third in the history of the Games for Ukrainian women.
In the 1/4 finals, Ukrainian women crossed arms with representatives of Italy. From the beginning, the Ukrainian team took the initiative (15:11), but in the course of the fight, the rivals were able to win back (34:35). 45:37 remained behind the Ukrainian women.
In the 1/2 finals, the Ukrainian team met with the Japanese team, who knocked out the world champions of the last two years, representatives of Hungary. However, wards Andrea Terenzio and Yevhen Statsenko did not leave any chance to their opponents, losing only one fight out of nine. The Ukrainians quickly recovered, turning the score from 17:20 to 25:22, and did not lose the lead anymore. The winning point for the team was set by Olha Kharlan - 45:32!
In the final, the South Korean national team awaited, which sensationally defeated the hosts - the French national team.
"However, the Ukrainian women demonstrated to the whole world the indomitability of our people, their professionalism, the strength of the team and the Will to Victory. In an extremely intense match, the Ukrainian women had to play back each time, because the Korean women were ahead. However, in the final ninth fight, Olha Kharlan was able to turn the tide of the game and win the crucial victory for the team and all of Ukraine - 45:42," the NOC emphasizes.
In this way, Ukrainian women won the third medal for Ukraine at the Olympic Games - "gold".
In addition, for Olha Kharlan, this victory was also significant, as from now on she is the most decorated Ukrainian athlete in the history of the Olympic Games. Kharlan has 6 awards from the Olympics: three individual "bronze" and three team awards: two "gold" and one "silver"!
Meanwhile, Yuliya Bakastova won the title of Olympic champion at her debut Olympics, and Alina Komashchuk and Olena Kravatska became two-time medalists of the Games. To the silver medal in Rio, the Ukrainians added the "gold" of Paris.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Ukrainian Mykhailo Kokhan made it to the final of the 2024 Olympic Games in the hammer throw.
In addition, for the second time in her career, Yaroslava Mahuchikh will compete in the high jump final of the Olympic Games. Together with her, Ukrainian Iryna Herashchenko also made it to the finals.
It will be recalled that Serhii Kulish previously became the silver medalist of the Olympic Games in rifle shooting from three positions at a distance of 50 meters.
Before that, fencer Olha Kharlan won a bronze medal, which became the first medal for Ukraine at the XXXIII Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
