"Competent and experienced." Scholz believes Harris "quite likely" to win US election

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called US Vice-President Kamala Harris a "competent and experienced" politician who could quite likely win the US election.

This is reported by Reuters.

So, Scholz was unusually outspoken in his support for Joe Biden before the latter dropped his re-election bid last weekend and endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee to face Trump in the November election.

The publication notes that many German politicians fear that Trump may impose higher tariffs on imports if he returns to office, and question the US's support for the NATO military alliance.

In addition, Germany was often the target of Trump's ire during his first term because of its positive trade balance with the United States and low defense spending. However, Berlin has increased its defense spending in recent years.

"The U.S. election campaign will certainly be exciting, now with a somewhat new lineup and a new opponent," Scholz said at the annual summer press conference on Wednesday.

He added: "I think it's entirely possible that Kamala Harris will win the election, but that will be up to the American voters."

Scholz also said he met Harris several times.

"She is a competent and experienced politician, who knows exactly what she is doing. She knows what she wants and what she can do," he said.

Also at the press conference, Scholz announced that he will run for the post of chancellor for a second term.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Vice President Kamala Harris was two percent ahead of the US presidential candidate from the Republican Party, Donald Trump, in a national poll.

Trump has said that he thinks Vice President Kamala Harris will be easier to defeat at the November election than Democratic incumbent Joe Biden.

Trump said he is "absolutely" ready for a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.

He previously said that Vice President Kamala Harris is "vicious and dumb" and called it a "bad combination."
