Pentagon allows lifting of ban on strikes by American weapons deep into russia

The United States may allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine to fire ATACMS missiles deep into russian territory, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said during a briefing, the Pentagon's official portal reported.

"The US does not allow Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles for "deep" strikes against russia. But this may change," she said.

Singh recalled that until recently, Ukraine was prohibited from using American weapons against military facilities located on the territory of the russian federation, but after another escalation by the Kremlin, which launched an offensive in the Kharkiv Region, Washington lifted this restriction and allowed strikes on russia's border regions.

On July 12, US President Joe Biden touched on the topic of strikes by American weapons deep into russia. According to the head of state, so far such attacks "make no sense".

"If he (Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, - ed.) could hit Moscow, hit the Kremlin, would it make sense? It wouldn't. The question is how best to use the weapons that he has, that we have for him," he said after the NATO summit.

In late May, the US President secretly allowed Ukraine to use American weapons for strikes on russian territory, limiting the affected area to areas bordering the Kharkiv Region, from which the russian army was attacking. The White House later confirmed that Washington had authorized "pointed and limited" strikes on russian military facilities to prevent attacks.

According to The Washington Post, the US has limited the depth of strikes to 100 km from the border, which makes it impossible to hit key russian airfields used for attacks on Ukrainian cities. The Department of State says it will allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine to launch long-range strikes if russia tries to expand the Kharkiv front.

According to Politico, during the NATO summit in Washington, Kyiv was planning to get the US to lift restrictions on striking deep into russia. In particular, Ukraine expected to receive permission to use ATACMS missiles for this purpose, capable of hitting objects at a distance of up to 300 km. During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insisted that this is necessary for military success.
