Bavarian Prime Minister and head of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Söder, admits that the Union-led federal government may begin returning conscripted men to Ukraine.
He told about this in an interview with the Münchner Merkur newspaper.
So, Söder said that Germany will toughen its policy towards Ukraine if the CDU/CSU heads the German government.
He emphasized that his party would support the sending of Ukrainians subject to military service "if Ukraine asks us for it." He also noted that he wants to put an end to the automatic right of Ukrainians to payments.
At the same time, the leader of the opposition party added that Ukraine's accession to NATO is currently not under discussion.
"Offering membership now, in the midst of a war, would mean that NATO would have an obligation to help from that point on. That would make us belligerent. We are clearly against that," he said.
Söder also said that he was very cautious about the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
"Despite all the understandable support for Ukraine, the EU and we will also face huge problems," he said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Germany allocated a new package of military aid to Ukraine. It includes IRIS-T air defense systems, HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems, and Leopard 1 tanks.
