Russian army starts to feel pressure of AFU counterattacks - ISW

Russian troops are starting to feel the pressure of Ukrainian counterattacks, but the ability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to carry out powerful counterattacks still depends on the help of the West.

This was reported by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Analysts note that the arrival of Western aid to the front allowed Ukrainian forces to stabilize critical areas of the front. The Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out tactically significant and successful counterattacks in the north of the Kharkiv Region and in the direction of Kreminna, starting from mid-May 2024.

Although the AFU do not yet conduct counterattacks on the scale necessary to seize the initiative on the battlefield, tactical counterattacks increase the cost to russian forces of continuing their slow and exhausting offensive strategy.

For example, the counterattacks of the Ukrainian army in the north of the Kharkiv Region forced the russian troops to redeploy some units away from the places where their centralized command should hypothetically be.

"ISW observed that russia redeployed units of the 810th Marine Brigade and a battalion tactical group of the 9th Motorized Rifle Brigade to the north of the Kharkiv Region in mid-June, while other units of the 810th Infantry and 9th Motorized Rifle Brigades remained near Krynky and Toretsk," the report says.

According to ISW, the russian federation distributes and deploys Airborne Forces units along the entire front line. For example, units of the 137th regiment of the 106th Airborne Division are fighting in the Kherson Region, while other units of this regiment are fighting near Siversk.

Analysts conclude that the division and deployment of units of one large unit indicates that russian troops are beginning to come under pressure from Ukrainian counterattacks. This shows that the front line is not as static as putin makes it out to be.

At the same time, ISW emphasizes that Ukraine's ability to carry out more powerful and organized counterattacks still depends on stable military support from the West.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Armed Forces of Ukraine denied the capture of Yasnobrodivka in the Donetsk Region by the russians.

On July 7, analysts of the Ukrainian OSINT project DeepState said that the Ukrainian military repelled the russians near the village of Hlyboke.
