There will be no elections without peace. Zelenskyy said that 90% of Ukrainians against elections during war

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that holding elections during the war is possible only after a ceasefire is established and amendments to the legislation are made through parliament.

He said this in an interview with journalist Dasha Burns.

Zelenskyy called the idea of ​​the elections "wonderful" and noted that he would be "happy" to hold them as soon as possible, but emphasized: "90% of Ukrainians are against holding elections without a ceasefire."

According to Zelenskyy, this is explained by the complexity of organizing voting during hostilities.

"It's terrible. How our soldiers will vote. They defended, they should vote, and we should hear them. It's terrible how 8 million people who are abroad will vote. But they should elect the President," he said.

What is known about the prospects for holding elections in Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the issue of the need to hold elections in Ukraine is being raised by some Western partners, including the United States.

The day before, the Financial Times wrote, citing sources, that President Zelenskyy allegedly intends to announce the holding of elections on the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of russia.

Later, the media wrote, citing the Office of the President, that holding elections is possible only if there is an appropriate security situation. Until it is not, no elections will be held.

What the CEC says about the elections

The Central Election Commission (CEC) announced the registration of 34 million voters in Ukraine. This is five million less than during the elections held in 2019.

The CEC also proposes to establish a 6-month preparatory (or transitional) period after the end of martial law and before the start of the electoral process. And proposes to regulate the elections after the termination or abolition of martial law.

Among the key challenges of post-war elections or elections under a state of emergency, the CEC names millions of Ukrainian voters abroad who need to be provided with the opportunity to vote. According to the CEC, out of 6.5 million Ukrainians abroad, 350 thousand voters are registered with consular authorities.

The possibility of holding elections using the Diia application is currently not in the practical realm. The state is not carrying out any technical developments or preparatory steps for such a voting format.
