Russia wants all of Ukraine, but will have to give in – Trump
US President Donald Trump acknowledged that moscow wants to take over Ukraine completely, but stressed that russia will have to give in.
He made the remarks in an interview with the Meet the Press program, NBC News reports.
Host Kristen Welker asked Trump what exactly russia would have to give up as part of a potential peace deal with Ukraine. The US President responded bluntly: “All of Ukraine.”
Clarifying his answer, Welker asked if he meant that russia would not keep any of the captured Ukrainian regions. Trump replied: “No, no. Russia would have to give up all of Ukraine. Because what Russia wants is all of Ukraine. And if I didn’t get involved, they would be fighting right now for all of Ukraine. Russia doesn’t want the strip that they have now; Russia wants all of Ukraine. And if it weren’t me, they would keep going.”
This statement contradicts the recent position of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who in an interview with The Free Press claimed: Russia does not plan to completely seize Ukraine. According to Rubio, neither russia nor Ukraine has the ability to fully achieve their military goals.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Trump previously stated that in the negotiations to resolve the war between russia and Ukraine, the United States is closer to one of the parties. At the same time, he did not specify which side he was referring to.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared new details of his meeting with Trump in the Vatican. He said that the personal conversation had yielded results.
