European Parliament adopts resolution against forcing Ukraine to surrender for sake of "peace deal"

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on March 12, stating that the European Union is Ukraine's main strategic ally and should help it defend its right to self-defense.

This is according to a message on the official website of the European Parliament.

The resolution states that after the US changed its position on russian aggression against Ukraine, which includes openly accusing Ukraine of a protracted war, the European Union has become Ukraine's main strategic ally.

"Following an “apparent shift” in the US position on Russia’s war of aggression, “which has included openly blaming Ukraine for the ongoing war”, the EU and its member states are now Ukraine’s primary strategic allies and must maintain their role as its largest donor, according to MEPs. To uphold Ukraine’s right to self-defence, the EU and its member states must significantly increase their much-needed assistance to the country,” the resolution says.

MEPs noted that the European Union must contribute to providing reliable security guarantees for Ukraine in order to deter further russian aggression.

"MEPs are deeply opposed to any attempts to blackmail Ukraine’s leadership into surrendering for the sole purpose of facilitating a so-called ‘peace deal’," the report says.

The European Parliament also called in its resolution for there to be no negotiations on European security without the presence of the EU.

The resolution states that Ukraine's future lies in the European Union, and therefore the MEPs called for the acceleration of negotiations on the country's membership in the bloc.

The resolution was adopted by 442 MEPs. 98 voted against, and another 126 abstained.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in early March this year it became known that the European Parliament wants to deprive Hungary of its voting rights due to its systematic blocking of decisions on Ukraine.

And in January, the MEPs condemned russia for manipulating history to justify the war against Ukraine.
