US blocks Canada's initiative in G7 to combat russia's shadow fleet

The US has vetoed Canada's proposal to create a task force within the G7 to thwart russia's shadow fleet. They want to soften the wording of this initiative.

Bloomberg reports this with reference to the draft statement and sources.

Canada will host a summit of foreign ministers next week. The participating countries are to publish a joint statement. This statement contained the word "sanctions" and the wording "Russia's ability to maintain its war" in Ukraine. The US wants to remove them.

However, during negotiations on the wording of a joint statement on maritime issues, the US is trying to strengthen the wording in the context of China. They want to directly call it a threat.

The text of the joint statement is not yet final – it can still be changed before or during the summit.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 10, the US Treasury Department announced the introduction of new sanctions against russia.

The restrictions include Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, tankers of the "shadow fleet", oil traders and a number of companies.

The new sanctions of the United States of America affected 143 tankers from the so-called "shadow fleet", with the help of which the aggressor country exports oil bypassing restrictions.

In 2024, these tankers provided more than 40% of oil exports by sea.
